What to expect
Asian medicine is specific to you and your unique health history. Multiple patients with the same diagnosis of migraine headaches could each receive a different diagnosis and acupuncture treatment, based on their individual symptoms. Specific questions are asked to try to determine your general pattern of health. Your health is additionally assessed by feeling the pulsations at each wrist, palpating your abdomen, and observing the color and form of your tongue. This information is then interpreted in the context of your symptoms (both past and present), work and living habits, physical environment, family health history, and emotional life.
After completing the initial assessment I will insert sterile, disposable needles. Insertion of the needles goes unnoticed by some and feels like a small pinch to others. Needles remain in place for twenty to forty minutes, and the entire treatment typically lasts appoximately one hour. A feeling of relaxation and mood elevation often accompanies treatment. Most patients are pleased to find that the sessions are comfortable, relaxing, and therapeutic.
Some notice a relief of symptoms or feel more energetic immediately in the days that follow treatment, others need a few sessions to notice a change in their symptoms. It usually takes multiple sessions for symptoms to resolve. Acute conditions typically require eight to ten sessions for symptoms to resolve, though chronic conditions may require significantly more treatments. Many people choose to continue treatments even after their symptoms are resolved.
